With your support, we work with The Bay Foundation and local divers to remove over-populations of sea-urchins, and restore giant kelp forests in Palos Verdes, Southern California.
Kelp ecosystems in California are in a state of crisis. In Southern California more than 85% of the giant kelp forests have been devastated, and in Northern Calfornia almost 95% of the bull kelp forests have disappeared in the last 10 years.
Due to the human impacts of climate change and the removal of key predators like sea otters, sea urchins (which feast on the kelp) have proliferated to create "barrens" where kelp cannot grow.
The good - once the urchins are removed - kelp is the fastest growing organism and can grow up to 2ft per day!
Every square foot of giant kelp you help to restore:
You can also sign up for a SeaTrees Planting Subscription. Think about a SeaTrees subscription as a recurring donation - you can automatically restore kelp forests each month. Payments will be automatically charged on a monthly basis. No minimums or obligations – you can modify, skip, or cancel your subscription at any time!
