Restore the Watershed in Cardiff

With your support - we work with the MedGardens project of The Cleanwave Foundation to holistically restore the seagrass and macroalgae ecosystems surrounding the well-known tourist destination of Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands of Spain. Years of disruption caused by boat traffic and less than adequate boating guidelines have led to the destruction of these critical ecosystems, and with your support, we can bring them back and help them thrive for years to come. 

Each sq-ft of seagrass and algae you donate to restore contributes to the holistic restoration of this entire marine ecosystem, including:

• planting of seagrass
• growing macroalgae
• removing marine debris
• educating the local community and local boat captains
• supporting local volunteer activations
• conservation signage in tourist areas
• monitoring and maintenance of restored seagrass meadows

With your support ($1 per tree planted) - we work with local communities in Mida Creek, Watamu Kenya to plant mangrove SeaTrees to restore coastal ecosystems.

This project restores 100+ hectares of degraded mangrove forest within the Malindi Watamu National Marine Park and Reserve - a UNESCO Designated Biosphere Area + one of the world’s oldest Marine Protected Areas.

Every mangrove you help to plant:

• Provides sustainable employment and generates economic opportunities for the communities in the Mida Creek area. Community members are then able to provide meals to their families, pay for school fees, and gain access to health care with wages earned through mangrove nursery management.
• Helps to protect Mida Creek from storm-surges and sea-level rise
• Creates critical habitat for threatened species including Green sea turtles.
• Helps protect the surrounding coral reefs from sediment runoff
• Sequesters carbon in one of the most efficient ways possible. In fact, mangrove forests are 5x more effective at storing carbon than tropical forests.

With your support ($25 per piece of coral) -  we work with Ocean Gardener to restore the degraded coral reefs off the coast of the Nusa Penida region of Bali, Indonesia.

Each piece of coral you help us grow:

• Provides sustainable employment for the people in the Nusa Penida region of Bali, Indonesia  - at a time when the pandemic had devastated Bali’s tourism-based economy
• Supports over a dozen local families
• Creates critical habitat for 500+ species

Your piece of coral will be grown in the Ped Acropora Coral Nursery until it is transplanted onto the reefs and monitored until the coral reef rebuilds, and marine life returns to the area. This will rapidly restore biodiversity to the reef and create a new thriving ecosystem.

With your support ($2 per tree planted) - we work with our project partners WILDCOAST to plant 100,000 mangrove trees across 25 acres of mangrove habitat with the help of the local community members in the El Datil region of Laguna San Ignacio, Baja, Mexico.

This project provides living-wage employment and training opportunities for the local community, empowers gender equity, protects the area from increased climate change impacts, and safeguards critical habitats for several vulnerable species.
At the heart of this project is a local group of women, “Mujeres de El Dátil,” who were trained in 2019 by WILDCOAST on mangroves environmental services, seedlings collection and planting techniques, as well as monitoring and maintenance of restored sites.

Every mangrove you help to plant:

• Provides living-wage employment to the local community.
• Improves the livelihoods of   250+ inhabitants of El Dátil. 
• Trains 11+ women in project management and monitoring.
• Protects local areas and communities from sea-level rise and increased storm surges.
• Safeguards critical gray whale nursery habitat.
